Later, when I searched the house for what had survived the fire, I found a
cookbook floating face down in the sink. I suddenly became hungry for bread, but
the water had eroded some of the recipeís words.

Who would have east at this hour? East was the couple next door who were
always throwing things. It was worth a try.
"Yeast," the wife said. "You need a tablespoon of yeast."

Lisa Anne Sutter is a Masters student in Creative Writing at Eastern Michigan
